Chapter 13

Was that . . . who I thought it was? Having glasses on and seeing him clearly made things three times worse, three times more real. Having seen him in blurred drunk vision meant my brain would hopefully dissolve the memories faster. But seeing him as clear as fluorescent day meant this memory wouldn’t fizz out as easily.

Thirst-Trap. In the mighty-fine flesh.

Maybe if we kept our heads down and didn’t move, he might not notice us? Maybe if he dropped that bag of what smelled like deep-fried food off at the desk, he’d walk right back out on his merry way.

“What’s he doing here?” I muttered to Rohan, leaning toward him so Thirst-Trap wouldn’t hear me.

“I don’t know. Wait . . .” He frowned and looked at the cell phone in his lap.

“What?”

“I’d texted Seth to tell him what happened, in case he could help us out in getting McConaughey not to press charges. He said he’d work it out but couldn’t come down here fast enough, so he was sending his brother. The one who . . . owns the pub . . .”

We both stared at the backside of Thirst-Trap in all his T-shirt-and-jeans glory. He chatted it up with Stechris. They had a merry ole time while the clock was ticking down to the inception of our criminal induction.

He placed a large plastic bag on the table as Stechris rose and sifted through the goodies, pulling out aluminum containers and opening corners to release fragrant aromas of fried, spicy, cheesy foods.

My mouth watered. I hadn’t eaten since the taco truck bowl in the early evening and the side salad at the pub and that one nacho chip.

My stomach grumbled hard. Dizziness tackled my brain cells and everything sort of whooshed around my face. I felt like I was going to pass out.

They had a long conversation filled with laughs and a few times where Stechris glanced at us, his face super stoic and creepy.

“He’s just trying to psych us out,” Rohan grumbled. “Just keep looking sad and apologetic.”

I didn’t have to try at all. My lower lip quivered.

“Nice touch,” he commended.

After what seemed like forever, and even more so when Stechris and his coworker started eating and my stomach edged toward imploding from hunger, Stechris stood. Thirst-Trap took a step away from the table but didn’t look at us. He just rubbed his chin and looked at the desk.

“You know,” Stechris started, “you could be charged with trespassing and have a criminal record.”

I nodded, my hands trembling as if we were on trial waiting for a verdict. Would we be incarcerated for life?

“These are serious crimes.”

I made a face. Really? There weren’t worse things happening in Austin? Like homicide and rape and fraud and beatings?

He paced around the desk, his hands clasped behind his back as the other guy snickered and Thirst-Trap rolled his eyes.

“We’re not going to charge you.”

Rohan and I blew out a collective breath. Oh, thank the mother of the gods.

“But this is a first and final warning.
